If the woman wears clothes that accentuate her body, like bodycon dresses or low-cut tops; some quickly assume that she dresses for men. If she chooses colorful prints and A-line dresses (think Jess from New Girl), some claim she falls into a category of women who dress for other women; hoping to be recognized for their fashion sense.

These costumes are more than fabric and thread. Behind their seams and silhouettes, they hold priceless stories about American history and culture. Their home is close by, but most days, you wouldn’t even notice it is there. Among the classroom buildings and the green areas at Stephens College, the Historic Costume Gallery rests quietly trapped in the mezzanine, between the first and second floor of the Lela Raney Wood Hall.

Back in time

I usually think more of the future, than I do of the past. The future is filled with possibilities, dreams, paths that can lead anywhere. However, the past comes up sometimes, and I have to admit, it is a comfortable place… childhood laughter and games, stories with known endings, certainty. And then comes the nostalgia, for “the good days”, for times and places that I was never in, but can’t help but admire, and wonder what life was like back then.
